Five years of camp photography, hundreds of photos

With experience, I began to understand how I would compose and take photos in various situations, including where to stand (or, in so many cases, kneel), how to angle, and what lens to use. Invariably, the campers intuitively knew how to compose themselves, effortlessly assembling, without any direction from myself, and making the perfect photo.

Camp photography is challenging and it is rewarding. It was a nonstop practice of finding new ways to shoot to keep things fresh through the years. I always shot in color for multiple uses; end-of-week slide shows, social media, and advertising, to name a few. Here in Summer Camp part 1 and part 2, I chose to edit without color for creative choice and emotion, and also as a nod to the timeless quality of black and white film, something I very often used before coming aboard with digital cameras.

I had the opportunity to witness this sacred process during a visit to Camp Nor'wester in the San Juan Islands in 2015.
